The Firs ELGAR SEAT BLOSSOM

2022 sees the return of the Elgar Festival to both Worcester & Malvern, and this event, from 2 – 5 June, coincides with the Malvern Walking Festival.

On Saturday 4 June an Elgar specific walk has been created where Festival goers can “listen learn & walk”

The walk commences from Elgar’s birthplace, The Firs National Trust  museum in Lower Broadheath.  Meeting at 10.30am walkers will be free to look around the museum for an hour { National Trust fees apply }.

At 11.30am a minibus will arrive to take the group into Malvern taking in 2 locations where Elgar lived.  Here the music that he composed at these particular properties will be played and our host will give details of Elgar’s life at the time.

This event is being led by Colin Harnett, a scholar, musician and volunteer host at The Firs.  Colin has studied the life and times of the composer and will be able to bring to life Elgar’s time spent in and around the area he loved so much, and kept retuning to.

The minibus then travels to British Camp on the county border where the group will start their walk up to Herefordshire Beacon.  Over a picnic lunch, Colin will give more information on Elgar’s life and play recorded music that was influenced and composed on, and by, the Malvern Hills.

After lunch the group will descend from the Hills and walk towards Little Malvern and visit St Wulston’s church where the Elgar graves are situated in the churchyard.  Again there will be more information given and music played – and it is most likely that Nimrod will feature somewhere during the day’s music.

The day is planned to feature the music of Elgar & his connection to the Malvern area and Hills.   He was himself a keen walker and cyclist and this walking event aims to celebrate his work and music in our locality.

The group will then travel back to Lower Broadheath at the end of the afternoon.

The total walking distance will be circa 5 miles and as it is up on the Malvern Hills, some upping & downing has to be expected!   For more information and booking contact the Malvern’s Tourist Information Centres follow the link below.
